Stepping Up to Management

As Andrew Hill from the Financial Times says, “Management matters. Above all, managers matter”. Therefore getting a promotion to a management role is a good thing, right? It’s certainly true that gaining a promotion to a management position can bring a number of positives to an individual and a firm, but it can also be a challanging experience. It’s important that firms recognise both the rewarding and the challenging experience an individual can face when moving to a management role.

On the positive side, moving to a management or team leader role, can be an incredibly fulfilling experience. For starters, you have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the success of the organisation with an increase in responsibility. Also for the individual, there are opportunities for growth such as training programs and the exposure to senior staff members within the firm.

But it’s also important to consider and properly prepare for some of the potential negatives. One of the biggest challenges is the increased stress and pressure that comes with the job. Afterall, you are no longer just responsible for your work, but also that of your team. Another one of the major challenges is competing demands, as a team leader will be responsible to vocalise both the firm’s needs to your team, but also your team’s needs to the firm.

The Patterson Group’s team includes the author of the CII’s J07 and AF6 study texts, along with over a decade of real-world team leader experience, so how can we help?
